Essentially, my boys learned that life in a family with two dads is just the same as what they know. We laughed at Dad and Pa’s interactions, and recognised many of the scenarios from our everyday life, for example the horror of having a favourite soft toy go missing. The story is a typical fantasy quest, told at an engaging pace and with plenty of opportunity to reconnect with favourite characters and grow fond of new ones.Īs for myself, the thing I love most about Newbery’s books is the great representation, which feels totally organic to the story.
The boys particularly loved meeting Cadno’s new magical friend Blodyn, as well as the grumpy snabbit. My kids were hooked from the first sentence – find me a 7-year-old who can resist the mention of a unicorn butt. With the adventure set in a magical land, we encounter a whole menagerie of new magical creatures. Having defeated the Grendilock, they now must travel to Fargone to save the country from Draig, a dreaded shadow monster that is slowly draining the life from the land. In The First Shadow Dragon, Charlie and his friends Lippy and Roo are back to face off against another monster. The perfect amount of action, emotion, and adventure packed into it and I may have a shed a tear or two… 🦊Īs in the first book, the LGBTQ+ Rep is perfectly presented in this adventure-packed middle grade story and I just love how natural it all feels (as it should!) - if you haven’t yet got this on your radar, it’s published on the 24th April and you should most definitely grab yourself a copy, I will definitely be purchasing to add to my shelf with the last Firefox🥹Ī final Thankyou to for the ARC, I absolutely adored it🧡 I slipped into the world of Fargone and never wanted to leave, the world building was simply fantastic, and the connection you feel to the characters left me aching for more. I wanted to know more of Fargone and see more of Charlie’s Dad’s and BOY OH BOY!
